It is involved in numerous metabolic processes and plays a very special role in strengthening your immune system. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the water-soluble vitamins along with the B vitamins and folic acid. This means that it can only be stored in the body in small amounts and therefore has to be taken in daily with food. Vitamin C is found in large quantities, especially in fresh vegetables and (citrus) fruits. The vitamin is essential for life and fulfils various important tasks in the organism. The vitamin was first researched in 1747 and researchers found that vitamin C helps to protect malnourished seafarers from scurvy (vitamin C deficiency disease). This also explains the name "ascorbic acid", which means "without scurvy" in Latin.
